Proverbs 31:1

I was just reading Proverbs 31:1-9, The Sayings of King Lemuel, and something in verse 1 caught my attention. Even though these are considered King Lemuel’s sayings, it starts with, “an inspired utterance his mother taught him.”

His mother taught him, and what she imparted became his legacy—what he was known for. This one verse encouraged me in two ways and reminded me of how blessed I am.

First, it served as a reminder to continually strive to train my children in the way they should go. The things we teach them now could become their legacy one day. I want the values I instill in Landon and Kylee to help shape who they become and how they live.

Second, it reminded me to never take our mothers (or fathers) for granted. Thank you, mama, for everything you’ve taught me through the years. Life hasn’t always been perfect, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. All that we’ve been through has shaped who I am today and led me to where I am now.

Since moving to Kentucky, I’ve seen the genuine love my mama has for Christ and for others. I’ve come to understand the wisdom she’s gained through her relationship with Him. She inspires me daily, and I can only pray that what I’m learning from her will contribute to the legacy I leave behind. Mama, I love and appreciate you so much.

As I continued reading the rest of the passage, I noticed how it encourages us not to waste our time on selfish or fleshly desires, but instead to focus on others. It reminded me of something you’ve often talked about—Kingdom Living. Living for God’s kingdom means putting others before ourselves, focusing on things that matter eternally, and following the wisdom and love He calls us to share.
