Trusting in Him

Trusting God. It’s something we hear about all the time, but what does it really mean? It goes beyond simply believing He’s in control. True trust is about surrendering everything—your fear, your doubt, and your carefully laid plans—to His perfect will. And if we’re being honest, that’s a lot harder to do in practice than it sounds.

In Proverbs 3:6, we’re given a promise: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” It’s a verse I’ve held onto for years—a kind of life motto. Acknowledging Him in all my ways and trusting that He will make my path clear is something I strive for, but I struggle to commit to fully. Trusting God is not a one-time decision; it’s a daily surrender, a relationship that requires constant nurturing.

1. Trust Isn’t Passive—It’s Active

One of the misconceptions about trust is that it’s passive. We sometimes think that trusting God means sitting back and doing nothing, waiting for Him to make things happen. But Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways acknowledge Him.” That’s an action. Trusting God means actively seeking His will in everything we do—our decisions, our relationships, our goals.

There have been moments in my life when trusting God was the only option left. I had no control over the situation, whether it was in parenting, career decisions, or navigating personal struggles. But trust didn’t mean sitting idly by—it meant actively acknowledging Him in the midst of my uncertainty. It meant praying, seeking His Word, and following the steps He laid out for me, even when I couldn’t see the whole picture.

2. Trust Requires Letting Go of Control

Here’s where it gets tough: trusting God means letting go of control. And if you’re anything like me, that’s not easy. We like to plan, strategize, and have a clear sense of where we’re going. But trust means surrendering those plans to God and believing that His way is better, even if it doesn’t look like what we had in mind.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve struggled with this—holding tightly to my own plans, thinking I know best. But every time I hit a wall, I’m reminded that trusting God means releasing my grip. It’s about saying, “God, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I trust that You do, and I’m going to follow Your lead.”

Proverbs 3:6 reminds us that when we acknowledge Him in all our ways, He will make our paths straight. It doesn’t say we’ll make our own paths straight by doing things our way. That’s a humbling reminder for me because it means I have to trust that He sees the bigger picture. I may only see a small part of the road ahead, but He sees the entire journey.

3. Trusting God Doesn’t Mean You Won’t Struggle

It’s important to recognize that trusting God doesn’t mean you won’t struggle. There have been times in my life when I thought I was trusting God, but fear and doubt crept in anyway. That’s because trust isn’t about having everything figured out—it’s about trusting Him even when you don’t.

One of the hardest seasons of trust for me was when I felt uncertain about my next steps in life. Whether it was as a parent, an insurance agent, or in my personal faith journey, I found myself at crossroads where I had no idea what to do next. Trusting God in those moments wasn’t easy. In fact, it was a constant back-and-forth between wanting to hold on to my own plans and reminding myself that God’s plans were better.

But even in those struggles, Proverbs 3:6 was a promise I could cling to. Acknowledging Him in every decision, even the ones that seemed impossible, gave me the confidence that He would make my path straight. It didn’t always mean things turned out the way I expected, but it meant that His direction was always for my good.

4. Trust Is an Ongoing Relationship

Trusting God is not a one-time event. It’s an ongoing relationship that requires daily commitment. There are days when it feels natural to trust Him, and there are days when I want to take matters into my own hands. But that’s the beauty of a relationship with God—He doesn’t expect perfection. He simply asks for a heart that continually seeks Him, even when it’s hard.

Every time I open my Bible, every time I pray, every time I acknowledge Him in the small moments, I’m building that relationship of trust. And with each step of faith, I’m reminded that trust is a journey, not a destination.

I love what Proverbs 3:6 teaches us—it’s a reminder that when we acknowledge God, when we trust Him, He takes the responsibility of directing our steps. We don’t have to have it all figured out. We just have to acknowledge Him and trust that He will guide us.

5. Trusting God Means Trusting His Timing

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that God’s timing is not our timing. We often want things to happen right away, but God works on a different schedule. Trusting Him means trusting that His timing is perfect, even when it feels like we’ve been waiting forever.

There have been seasons in my life where I was waiting for answers, waiting for direction, waiting for things to fall into place. And in those seasons, it was tempting to take matters into my own hands. But trusting God means trusting His timing, even when it doesn’t make sense to us. Proverbs 3:6 reassures us that when we acknowledge Him, He will make our paths straight—in His time.

Conclusion: Trusting God Is a Daily Choice

Trusting God isn’t something we master overnight. It’s a daily choice, a decision to surrender our plans, our fears, and our desires to the One who knows us better than we know ourselves. It’s about acknowledging Him in every aspect of our lives and believing that He will make our paths straight, even when the road ahead seems uncertain.

So today, let’s commit to trusting Him. Let’s acknowledge Him in all our ways, trusting that He will guide us. And when the path seems unclear, let’s hold on to the promise that He’s already gone ahead of us, preparing the way.
